How to achieve your new years resolutions.

 - by Ellen

As 2009 comes to a close, you may already be thinking of what you’d like to accomplish in 2010.

These tips are an extract from our 1 day workshop that is being held on the 9th of January in Dundrum (Dublin).

In this workshop we’ll be helping you to discover what it is that you want and how you’re going to achieve it in 2010. We’ll also be showing you how to deal with any obstacles that you may encounter

Creating goals for 2010 is one the single most important things that you will do for yourself, so please take the time to sit with the tips below or join us on the 9th.

First lets look at:

Why New Years Resolutions don’t work
Too Big.
Sometimes they are too big and overwhelming. If we set a goal that’s too big, it can be confusing to know where to start, and so it remains a goal not a reality.

Set in the negative.
We get more of what we focus on. If a goal is set in the negative, for e.g. “I don’t want to be single by this time next year”, the subconscious mind can only process the positive, it doesn’t “hear the word “not”", so it interprets this as “I want to be single by this time next year”.

No Accountability.
Every New Years Eve or at major times in our lives we tell each other our goals, we list off all the virtuous things we are going to do/ not going to do in the future. We day dream about how wonderful our life is going to be without all those bad habits and how this year things are going to be great! And of course they can be, but this time tends to be the last time we talk to our friends and loved ones about them. And slowly, over the weeks we forget altogether. We need to hold ourselves accountable for setting our own goals.

Not what we want.
When we set goals that we think we should have then we’re chasing something that isn’t really what we want and we’re half hearted about it.

In this workshop we’ll be showing you how to set goals that YOU really want, that’s right for you and your life only. We’ll also be showing you how to overcome obstacles that might come up for you such as fear, lack of motivation, anxiety, etc.

New Years Resolutions that will come true!

1) Know what you want and when.
What do you want? Focus on the positive. Sit down with a notebook and look at the goals you’d like to achieve in 2010.

Look at the following areas:

Family / friends
Health
Wealth
Romance
Career
Personal growth (how you feel about yourself)
Fun & recreation (Hobbies, sports, comedy events)
Physical environment (where you live & work)
Is there anything that you could be doing, short term or long term that will improve any or all of these areas of your life.

Balance and happiness is about not having “all your eggs in one basket”, ie not concentrating solely on your career while forsaking personal growth or health. The idea is to invest time and energy into each and every area above.

Map out what steps you will need to complete to achieve each goal and give each step a realistic timeframe.

2) Visualise your goals as if they’ve already happened.
The more vividly a goal is imagined, the more the subconscious can help it to happen. Regularly visualise your goals. See, feel and believe that they’re already true.

For example, your goal is to book a holiday to vietnam – your first visualization could be to see yourself walking into the travel agents to book the holiday, or if you want to loose weight, see yourself fitting into a smaller pair of jeans.

Feel the celebration inside your body as you accomplish your goals.

3) Celebrate your milestones.
At each stage along the way, stop and celebrate. Give yourself a pat on the back, buy yourself flowers, or tell a friend / partner about your accomplishments.

All too often we chastise ourselves for what we haven’t done, so this time congratulate yourself for what you have done!

Take time to give yourself positive feedback.

4) Take action.
For every time that you feel unmotivated or apathetic, take action, however small to get you one step closer to that goal.

Unless you take action, the goal will remain a goal and not a reality.

5) Have faith & persist.
Regularly remind yourself of why you’re doing these goals, keep the bigger picture in mind.

In summary, make your goals what you want, write out what steps need to be completed to achieve those goals, visualise each step as if it’s already happened, celebrate your milestones, take action towards making your dreams a reality and believe.

In the words of Anatole France:

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.”
